 Christians Against Poverty

Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is an international Christian charity working to help people out of debt and poverty; offering free debt counselling through a network of centres based in local churches.  Nationally, over 2,500 people a year go debt free as a result of working with CAP.

In Hemel Hempstead CAP is based in the Liberty Tea Rooms in Bank Court. It is managed by a partnership team of local churches including AFC.  Local teams also run:

  • a Money Course (a revolutionary money management course that teaches budgeting skills and helps people get control of their finances to avoid getting into debt),
  • Life Skills (a group course to teach practical skills for living on a budget including eating well while making money go further) and
  • Fresh Start (a group course designed to help individuals break free from life-controlling habits).

Christians Against Poverty can be contacted through Head Office (0800 328 0006) on line (www.capuk.org). or through Adeyfield Free Church’s contact – David Kerry (07898 788239).

 Loneliness and Isolation

Being alone is not the same as being lonely. There is nothing wrong with being on your own if you are comfortable with it. If however, you are feeling lonely there are plenty of ways at the AFC Centre to get companionship.  If you are a young Mum you could visit Little Fish and meet other Mums over a hot drink while the children play. There is a men’s walking group and Art Socials. If you are an older person there is Coffee Mates at the Adeyfield Community Centre.  All of the events are listed on this website and you are welcome to attend any which interest you. For additional queries please contact us by phone on 01442 260175 or by email admin@adeyfieldfree.org.uk

 Homelessness, poverty and social exclusion

Most people know DENS as the homeless charity for people in Dacorum. In fact, DENS does so much more than just providing a roof and a bed.  Our aim is to be the first port of call for people in Dacorum who are facing homelessness, poverty and social exclusion; to support and empower them to take the next positive step in their lives.
We ensure individuals have access to temporary and short-term accommodation, and individuals and families have access to food and provisions. We provide a range of accommodation options to support people to move on and sustain their own tenancy and we provide advice and training; empowering people to develop skills and confidence to build a better future and be an active member of their community. Planning your Visit

A Warm Hello

The following information is specifically for those planning a visit, so that you know what to expect before you arrive on a Sunday morning.

Where and When

We meet in the Worship room at the Adeyfield Free Church Centre each Sunday starting at 10:00am. On Sundays we enter via the garden, using either gate, from the lower carpark.
Find us

We recommend arriving 5-10 minutes early to ensure you get a parking space and find somewhere to sit before the service begins. When you arrive, you should be greeted at the hall door by a member of our Welcome Team.
We serve tea, coffee and biscuits after the service and you are welcome to join us. It is a great way to meet people. All refreshments are free but there is a plate for donations.

Accessibility: There is wheelchair access, and a sound loop for anyone who needs it. Please let one of the Welcome Team know on your arrival and they will help you to get set up. There is a disabled toilet on the same level as the worship room and hall.

IMG 7159Our Service

The main service begins at 10am with a warm welcome from one of our team members. We then share news and notices, usually about what’s going on in the life of the church and upcoming events and activities. Then follows a time of sung worship, led by our band. We typically have a few songs lasting approximately 10 - 15 minutes. We then have prayers and a reading from the bible on which the sermon is based. Our minister or one of our leaders will then give a sermon which is usually very practical and we are encouraged to apply it to our everyday life. We then finish with a final worship song and blessing. There is an opportunity to receive prayer at the end of the service. Communion is usually held on the second Sunday of the month.

What about my kids?

iStock-623301704-e159739484767Children stay with their parent or grown-up at the start of the service for the welcome, notices and songs . We really value worshipping God all together as a family. At the end of the songs someone will announce that it’s time for the younger members to go to their various groups. Children usually go out with their group leaders, you are welcome to take them the first few times and then join us back in the worship hall. have a great programme lined up for kids of all ages:
  • 0-2 years meet in the Creche. We have a room close to the worship room for those with very young children. Children must be accompanied by their parent/grown-up at all times.
  • 3-6 years meet 3 out of 4 Sundays in the Playroom
  • 7-11 years meet 3 out of 4 Sundays in the Children's room
  • 11 years + meet 3 out of 4 Sundays in the Youth room.
  • Young adults usually stay in service.

The kids group activities vary depending on the age but usually there is a friendly welcome, bible stories, praying, craft, fun games and free play. Please pick your children up as soon as the service finishes.

Getting Connected

Small Groups

While Sundays are a great way to meet new people, it is often in smaller gatherings that you can really get to know someone. Being part of one of our small groups allows you to make new friends, share together and support each other. We have a variety of groups that meet throughout the week, some afternoons and some evenings some on zoom. Check out Small Groups and see if there’s one that you could join, or we can put you in touch with a small group leader who will be more than happy to invite you along to their group.
